IATF 16949 Personal Safety Checklist of Maintaining Safety in the Workplace

The safety principles have been crafted just to protect people working with their full energies at the workplace. Enlisted below are rock solid ten steps for managing and maintaining safety culture in the organization that helps you stay safe in your business.

  1. Design and Follow Corporate Safety Policy

The IATF 16949 personnel safety checklist and documented corporate policy of safety is one of the most significant responsibilities of top management.

The main purpose behind crafting corporate safety policy is not only to show commitment but to embed a safety culture in the teams working for the business delivering the message across the oceans that safety is not the responsibility of any one department serving the business but it is the responsibility of everyone serving the business.

The moment the business displays safety policy on the corporate level, the teams will absorb the safety message resulting in the reduction of safety incidents by implementing safety measures will come into place.

  1. Safety Review Process Being Established on an Independent Basis

Most businesses often tend to overlook the important step which is to make safety reviews independent so that the safety of the organization can be reviewed with any biases.  The safety management team should be independent to other business operations but that does not mean maintaining safety across the organization is only the responsibility of Safety management team because safety is for everyone and the message of safety should come from everyone across the board.

  1. Evaluation of Hazards

Hazard is nothing but something that has the capability to harm and a proper evaluation should result in complete mitigation (if possible) or at least can minimize the hazards by substitution wherever necessary depending upon the criticality. Identification of all existing hazards and categorization of risk by their severity and likelihood is compulsory so that identified risks can be minimized or eliminated.

  1. Elimination or Minimizing the Identified Risks

Being a safety responsible team member, it should be everyone’s first priority to eliminate the hazards that are once highlighted by identification. If complete elimination of risks is not possible by any means then the risk should be minimized to the lowest possible level.

  1. Create Awareness by Spreading the Safety Message

If you are caught in between the process of hazard identification and elimination of identified hazards then it is important to spread awareness among the team about the hazards being identified so that your team can save themselves temporarily from identified hazards during you try to remove them or minimize them.

Another important factor is to motivate the team so they are aware of  the IATF 16949 personnel safety checklist to avoid injuries at the workplace and that doesn’t mean that employees start hiding behind when being injured. It means that work should be made safer as possible.

  1. Promote the Culture of Safety

Being an Automotive industry, it is important to promote the safe use of the product that you are selling or manufacturing. There are various ways by which an automotive industry can spread the safety message, for example, limiting the speed limit in the company’s premises. One must start by Practice what you preach and top leadership team is to take initiative on safety practices implementation so that safety message can be communicated down the line through every layer.

  1. Safety Record Incident Maintenance

In case any workplace incident happens, it is important to record the findings of the incident that unfortunately occurred by interviewing the victim and the people working nearby. The interview of the incident should not be in any case be look like “Victim Blaming” as it can act as a poison for the safety culture.

  1. Effective Monitoring of the Safety Performance

Congratulations on removing and minimizing the potential hazards existing in your workplace and environment! With the IATF 16949 personnel safety checklist now effective monitoring is required by everyone, especially by Safety specialists.

One has to identify safety champions in every department in every layer of management and non-management. It should be ensured that every safety incident is being reported and your team submits safety observations on a daily basis so that workplace injuries in the form of near misses or minor injuries can be avoided.
